The Tilson Mutual Funds and the Tilson Dividend Fund launched in March 2005. The former is managed by Whitney Tilson and Glenn Tongue, while the latter is managed by Zeke Ashton.
Mr. Tilson and Mr. Tongue manage the Tilson Focus Fund using a value-oriented investment strategy, seeking to identify companies whose stocks they believe are trading at a substantial discount – preferably at least 50% – to their intrinsic value. They concentrate the Fund in their best investment ideas – hence the name “focus” – and typically do not hedge via short or put positions.
In managing the Tilson Dividend Fund, Mr. Ashton and Mr. Richey also seek out stocks that they believe are undervalued, but which also offer high dividend yields relative to the rest of the market. They are more likely to buy a security at a more modest discount to their estimate of intrinsic value if they believe that the security’s dividend yield is sufficiently high, secure and/or likely to grow over time. They also expect to generate income from selling covered call options on securities in the Fund.
